Print out anything you need, quotes, comparison chart, la haine workbook. Have a look at the question, decide which films you would like to discuss and look at the essay plan. You are allowed to bring your notes to the assessment so organise them.
There is a blue folder with a divider with your name on it. Please print out all the documents you wrote on the front of your folder and place them in the file section under your name. Obviously the essay will go in the last week. Any questions just ask.
Analyze how teenagers and adults are represented in the teen movie genre. Discuss at least 2 of the following 4 films: Rebel Without a Cause, The Breakfast Club, La Haine and The Wave (if time).
Make sure you take notes on DISTINCT ( setting, themes, icons, narrative, characters ) and also how the teens come across and the way the see the adults and the adults see them in the various films. The following chart helps you with this. Keep up with your homeworks as you will be able to bring these into your controlled assessment. Also have a look at:
14th September - background research into Rebel, James Dean and the US in the 50s a paragraph on each section to set the film.
21st September - typed up DISTINCT notes for Rebel ( DISTINCT - describe in detail setting, themes, icons, narrative, characters and any significant textual analysis) and
so fill in the chart up to and including the knife fight.
28th September - How have Jim, Judy and Plato been represented as teenagers and what are their various relationships with adults in A Rebel Without a Cause. Looking specifically at key scenes in their homes, planetarium scenes, mansion and the race. Also look up quotes on http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0048545/quotes to help back up your points.
5th October - Finish all key scene analysis sheets for Rebel Without a Cause and print out in preparation for your controlled assessment.
w/c 12th October for two weeks- Breakfast club group presentations
This homework cannot be completed until you've seen the whole film so it's a two week homework which includes filling in your la haine workbooks, answering the questions and making sure you've got all the things written down on the front of your pack. You also need to print out your homeworks to take into your controlled assessments.
Double click on the images below to see the respective film trailers. Week commencing November 14th - I have not received a lot of homeworks!!! You must keep on top of these as they can be used in your controlled assessments to help you. Please fill in your la haine workbooks - especially concentrating on the characters as well as the events.
Week commencing October 31st Good Morning year 10s hope you had a great break. You must keep up with the following checklist - your dvd covers should be uploaded onto photobucket, your key scene analyses charts complete and I need a colour printout of your teen film evaluations please. Please ensure you have contributed equally to your Breakfast Club group presentations which will be Wednesday and Friday of this week. You will be assessed on these presentations by other students in the class. Have a look at the homework due next week (not this week, you're welcome). When the presentations are over we will starting the film La Haine. Brian Johnson: Dear Mr. Vernon, we accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. What we did *was* wrong. But we think you're crazy to make an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us... In the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain... Andrew Clark: ...and an athlete... Allison Reynolds: ...and a basket case... Claire Standish: ...a princess... John Bender: ...and a criminal... Brian Johnson: Does that answer your question?... Sincerely yours, the Breakfast Club.
Make the presentations visual and fun, include youtube clips to help support your findings and google some images. Start with an introduction and then concentrate on the four categories we did with Rebel Without a Cause - what we (the audience) think of the character, what the character says and thinks, what the character does (what actions support his character and the narrative), what other characters say or think of them.
DVD COVERS/POSTERS
Please upload your dvd covers onto photobucket http://s1083.photobucket.com/albums/j384/GCSEmedia/

LEVEL 4 - Candidates will produce and excellent response to the task that will demonstrate organisation and excellent presentation skills in the chosen medium. There will be excellent understanding of generic codes and conventions that ae used accurately within the chosen medium as well as a sense of creativity and stimulation employed in targeting a specific audience.
Analyze how teenagers and adults are represented in the teen movie genre. Discuss at least 2 of the following 4 films: Rebel Without a Cause, The Breakfast Club, La Haine and The Wave. The following chart helps you with this. Keep up with your homeworks as you will be able to bring these into your controlled assessment. Also have a look at:
Your practical productions - teenage dirtbag/teen film trailers also need to be completed. Things to think about:
- what are the different stages of production?
- what equipment/locations?
- what are the different roles and who will be responsible for what?
- what could go wrong?
Make sure you have enough time to edit it all together.
Don't forget time management and your teen film tasks.(see homeworks)
Homeworks are due every Wednesday when I see both classes and you are welcome to email me with homeworks, queries, concerns etc at brookes@bchs.essex.sch.uk any time or on studywiz. Homework list appears at the bottom of this blog.
In the classroom we will be studying film language - camera, sound, editing, sound and mise en scene for the next few weeks and this is a great website to look through though don't be too overwhelmed it is a Yale university site. You will also be filming an editing a teen film trailer or the first minute of Teenage Dirtbag.
COMPUTER ROOMS
Our first controlled assessment will be based on three teen films from different decades and you will also be asked to produce a dvd cover and poster for a new teen film idea you come up with. So we will also be researching teen films for your homework.
We will be studying teenage films and in our computer room sessions we will be carrying out a production task. This will involve researching past teenage films, your target audience by designing a questionnaire, developing a pitch for a film and then a marketing strategy (film poster) and a cover for when it comes out on dvd. The film poster will be A4 size and the dvd template I will upload here. First, make sure that you have created a media folder in My Documents in order to keep all your work. All homeworks should be kept here and if you're working at home make sure you email them to yourselves and keep them on a memory stick.
So first the research:
external image msword.png
save this document as teenage representations in your media folder.
1) Use this document to compile a list of ten teen films and try and devise the characteristics that are similar or distinguish them from each other. From this list we'll be able to see what the genre conventions are in order to apply them to your own film. Google teen films and look through a selection of respectable sites as well as personal ones to compile an interesting list. You can check on imdb.com for details of each of these films as well as trailers and their websites. Open and save this file to your documents and then fill in the columns. Genre of Teenage films.doc
2) When you have finished the list can you establish any common, recurring themes, character stereotypes and settings? Write 200 words on this with the title Conventions of Teenage films.
3) You need to devise a questionnaire. As most teenage films target teenagers, you need to get to know your audience, a good start is the information gathered from your classmates' questionnaires. Devise your own questionnaire and ask a variety of at least ten of your target audience 13-18 both genders, what they look for in a film, how often they go etc. About ten questions that will help you devise a succesful storyline. Teen films
Then the planning:
First read this guide to what makes a great teen film and try to incorporate this into your idea: teen flicks
4) Fill in worksheet make my film
external image msword.png
Make My Film.doc Re-format it if necessary to include all information you will need to pitch your film idea. Ask friends/classmates for advice/feedback and get Miss Brookes to approve it. Once approved you're ready to start designing your dvd cover and poster. Draw a draft of each with ideas of where the actors would go, the blurb, any reviews. Have a look at real dvd covers for inspiration.
You need to become familiar with Fireworks as it's the graphics programme we have available in our computer rooms. It's a slow and sometimes frustrating process but it's necessary for you to practice your graphic skills as this work will be part of your coursework grade.
5) Google dvd cover - choose one that has a spine front and back and save into My Pictures. Open Fireworks in All Programs/Core Programs/Fireworks, in Fireworks go to File - new - and size is 21.5 height and 28.9 width for dvd cover (A4 landscape) - other way around for poster size (A4 portrait). Then go to file import and find your dvd cover template. Double click, it may come in another size so just click on the corners and shrink it.
