We are now starting a new individual coursework project on advertising. It will take the same format of
research/planning/production/evaluation and you will need to provide evidence of all these stages.
I will let you know your groups at the end of the week.

Stage 1: Planning and Research 30 marks (get full marks by completing all below)


  • Background adverts – research other adverts. Find adverts, which you can use as inspiration for your own and annotate them in detail
Tasks ( Always write up what you completed each lesson as a production diary )
1) Mindmaps for each of the product ideas - perfume, makeup, confectionary, energy drinks
2) Once you've chosen the kind of product you would like to advertise, each group member should research and annotate similar
products and ideas on a powerpoint for the rest of the group members to put in their folders and inspire the real creation.
3) Mindmap of product names, which do you like, which not, why not as well as different sizes, types of fonts/colours each member draws up some ideas to print out and then you choose your favourite
4) Audience research – questionnaires Make your questionnaires specific to your target audience and include some of the ideas, names, slogans in your questionnaire to get some feedback on these. Try www.surveymonkey.com to type up your questions then send links via studywiz to friends and family they can fill it online and you get a summary of findings online too!
5) start to fill in planning my advert with drawings (flat plans) of your ideas then as a group choose favourite and why -
  • Create a brand name, slogan, copy (any other ad. Text), logo, USP (unique selling point)
  • Target audience: age, gender, other interests, and income bracket
  • Where/when/ product can be seen/bought/sold
  • Plan images – who will you take picture of – decide on mise-en-scene (setting, props, costume, hair, make up, gesture, position)
6) If your advert is made up of main image, product and text (slogan) each of these needs separate planning and drawings with annotations
7) Shooting schedule - times, people, props, costume, background - take plenty of photos so you have lots of choices.
Remember, you will each be working on a separate advert so choose the best pics and stick to your branding, fonts,
and slogans.
8) Show each stage of your revision process, any changes you make so you can demonstrate each stage of the advert process.

1) setting - where is it set? location, day/night - evidence?
2) Characters - what can you tell about them?
3) Denotations and Connotations of the different elements which make up the image.
4) Camera - angle, size of shot - what is our point of view?
5) Is there a caption? What is the anchorage? Is there a play on words?
6) What are the themes? In Dress to Kill we have sex and humour and a clever play on words.

In 107 we will be taking photos of each other to practise. In the computer room I want you to google adverts that you like and see if you can find adverts which fit each of these female expressions.
In a study of advertisements in women’s magazines, Trevor Millum offers these categories of female expressions:
  1. Soft/introverted: eyes often shut or half-closed, the mouth slightly open/pouting, rarely smiling; an inward-looking trance-like reverie, removed from earthly things.
  2. Cool/level: indifferent, self-sufficient, arrogant, slightly insolent, haughty, aloof, confident, reserved; wide eyes, full lips straight or slightly parted, and obtrusive hair, often blonde. The eyes usually look the reader in the eye, as perhaps the woman regards herself in the mirror.
  3. Seductive: similar to the cool/levellook in many respects - the eyes are less wide, perhaps shaded, the expression is less reserved but still self-sufficient and confident; milder versions may include a slight smile.
  4. Narcissistic: similarities to the cool/level and soft/introvertedlooks, rather closer to the latter: a satisfied smile, closed or half-closed eyes, self-enclosed, oblivious, content - ‘activity directed inward’.
  5. Carefree: nymphlike, active, healthy, gay, vibrant, outdoor girl; long unrestrained outward-flowing hair, more outward-going than the above, often smiling or grinning.
  6. Kittenlike: coy, naïve (perhaps in a deliberate, studied way), a friendlier and more girlish version of the cool/levellook, sometimes almost twee.
  7. Maternal: motherly, matronly, mature, wise, experienced and kind, carrying a sort of authority; shorter hair, slight smile and gentle eyes - mouth may sometimes be stern, but eyes twinkle.
  8. Practical: concentrating, engaged on the business in hand, mouth closed, eyes object-directed, sometimes a slight frown; hair often short or tied back.
  9. Comic: deliberately ridiculous, exaggerated, acting the fool, pulling faces for the benefit of a real or imaginary audience, sometimes close to a sort of archness.
  10. Catalogue: a neutral look as of a dummy, artificial, waxlike; features may be in any position, but most likely to be with eyes open wide and a smile, but the look remains vacant and empty; personality has been removed. (Millum 1975, 97-8)
